Located at the estuary of the Arade River, Portimão is known for its superb immense sandy beaches, bathed by warm and calm waters, which make this city a destination very attractive.
Portimão has a long fishing tradition, which developed particularly between the 19th and 20th centuries, with the advent of the cannery. Most of the buildings that you can see walking through the streets and squares of its historic center date from this period, as does the structure that houses the Portimão Museum, an excellent example of the rehabilitation of an old canning factory that received the Museum of the Year award from the Council of Europe in 2010. It pays tribute to the people and the city, which for centuries has exclusively dedicated all his life to the sea.
